I have been wanting to paint this striped pitcher for a while, and it goes so well with these sunflowers. I may have to do it again. Another sunny flower painting in the cold, warms up the day!
This is a variation of mediums. I have a little show this weekend and wanted to not worry about drying time, so I switched to acrylics. I was a little worried about using them as it has been a while, but I have enjoyed it, especially the quick drying time. I guess each medium has good points.
I have to give Karin Jurick a lot of credit, painting figures so small is difficult. I seem to get proportions much easier if I draw them bigger. You have to have the right eye for condensing everything, she has a great talent!
This chicken was so proud, strutting around displaying all that head stuff. I had never seen a chicken like this, and was quite taken with her!! If you've never seen one, you might wonder if it's real, hence the title. Actually, there were several, they were very entertaining.
These are 2 paintings I did of my sister and her grandson for her big 60 birthday. The larger one I did first as a quicker study, and it came out looser and a little more spontaneous than the smaller. That was the more finished one. But as is often the case, when you hold yourself to no restrictions, things seem to come out better. It is a depiction of a precious time between 2 special people, something they will enjoy remembering for years to come.
Not only is it a challenge to finish a painting and be happy with it, taking the photograph and having the picture do the painting justice can be frustrating. Lately, I think my paintings are much better in real life. I think I could use a little photo workshop! This is definitely better in real life!
This is the first post to my new oil blog. I have decided to keep my pastels and my oils separate to offer a little more consistency. I felt that mixing the 2 mediums resulted in a non-cohesive site, as my styles for each medium are so different. I hope this will be easier to follow, and now I am ready to get a little more into oils since working more on the pastel site as of late. I am a mostly self taught painter in both mediums and truly love experimenting. My goal is to eventually develop a more recognizable style, but right now I am influenced by so many painters and am enthralled with representational work along with loose, painterly brushwork that could even bring in some abstract elements. This is a learning journey for me and I am looking forward to this new method of posting. Enjoy, and please write with comments or questions!
Welcome, my name is Mary Anne Cary. I presently live in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, a small town just outside of Portland that sits abutting the frigid North Atlantic. A former graphic artist, I have been interested in art throughout my life and I am excited to finally step into the world of blogging as a way of broadening my horizons. My history as an artist has gone through many phases, I have experimented with many mediums and most recently have concentrated on oils and pastels. I particularly enjoy painting landscapes and still-life, but find it fascinating to work abstractly as well. I have been inspired by all the daily painters and look forward to the growth each one expresses from working daily. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about my artwork, pricing or if you are interested in purchasing anything you see. Additionally, you may visit my website to see more oil and pastels pieces.
